The negative effects social media has on relationships are extremely damaging and can completely ruin a relationship. Sometimes when you make a relationship "too" public, it can become artificial and toxic. When a relationship is too dependent on social media, the people involved can grow farther apart than ever and even start to not like each other. It is never a good idea to over share on social media, especially for relationships. It can end not only in a break up, but a permanent ending to the relationship as a whole. Social media can make partners feel jealous and insecure about their relationships. For example, if your partner posts with another person of your gender on social media it can cause jealousy. This jealousy then can turn into an argument between the couple. Also, say your significant other is talking to another person of your gender on a social media application. That can make the other feel uncertain about their relationship and may cause them to feel they aren't good enough or cause a fight due to their insecurities. According to Pew Research Center, "27% say social media makes them feel jealous or unsure about their relationship, with 7% feeling this way 'a lot.'" Though social media seems like a good outlet to get to know people and interact, these interactions may make people jealous and just overall cause so many issues that could be avoided. Pew Research states, "42% agree that their significant other shows a different side of themselves on social media than they do in person, with 9% agreeing strongly." This is also a negative because it can make people question which side of the person is authentic and everything you thought you knew about the person since you don't know which side is real. Changes can be made in the relationship due to this and make partners feel less attached to their partner and make them feel like they don't know their significant other at all. Finally, since posting on social media for your significant other for a special event (birthday, anniversary etc..) is so common some people may feel upset if their significant other doesn't do that for them. Social media makes relationships much more pressured and causes stress to each person in that relationship.
