Our formal, curricular theater courses offer a comprehensive, hands-on performance and technical education for students in grades 9 through 12. Whether a student is stepping onto the stage for the first time, training for advanced college programs, or discovering a passion for behind-the-scenes production, our curriculum builds creative confidence, technical mastery, and collaborative storytelling.
Foundational & Intermediate Acting
Theatre Arts 1
A full-year, 1-credit foundation course open to all high school students with no prerequisites. Students explore both performance and technical roles—including acting, directing, stage management, playwriting, costume design, and set design. The course builds ensemble skills through improvisation, monologue and scene study, play analysis, and theatre history, culminating in a student-produced one-act play.
Theatre Arts 2
A full-year, 1-credit course that expands on the fundamentals, diving deeper into directing, stage management, and playwriting. Units explore specialized forms such as pantomime, radio plays, acting with accents, musical theatre, scenic/lighting design, and theatre for social change. Students collaborate to produce and perform a one-act play as their final project.
Advanced & IB Pathways
IB Theatre Arts (Year 1 & Year 2)
IB Theatre Arts is a weighted, advanced, hands-on theater course that approaches dramatic art through three core pillars: Theatre in Context, Theatre Processes, and Presenting Theatre. Acting as creators, designers, directors, performers, and critics, students investigate global theater styles, traditions, and practitioners while collaborating to produce original works and stage community performances. This is a full two-year program; students must enter the course in Grade 11 and complete it in Grade 12 to earn IB Higher Level (HL) credit. Over the two-year sequence, students assemble a comprehensive portfolio featuring a Research Presentation, Collaborative Theatre Project, Production Proposal, and a Solo Theatre Piece. Completing IB Theatre Arts satisfies the Group 6 (Arts) subject requirement for IB Diploma candidates.
Technical & Inclusive Electives
Theatre Production Lab
A full-year, 1-credit practical studio where students operate as a professional technical crew. Held during the final period of the day, students gain hands-on training in set construction, scenic painting, lighting, audio systems, props, wardrobe, stage management, and board operation. Hands-on participation requires logging hours during evening rehearsals or Saturday crew calls. Fulfills the state 1-credit arts requirement and may be repeated for additional credit. This course is eligible for college credit.
Unified Theatre
A half-year, ½-credit inclusive course that pairs general education and special education students to explore acting, directing, set design, and costume construction side-by-side. Through shared creative projects, students build essential life skills—including communication, empathy, problem-solving, and confidence—within a supportive community studio.
