Our Family & Consumer Sciences (FACS) program equips students with essential life skills, hands-on experience, and practical knowledge. Emphasizing personal development, responsible citizenship, and career readiness, the FACS curriculum prepares students to navigate their personal and professional lives effectively.
Formal FACS instruction begins in Grade 6. In Grades 6 and 7, all students participate in a comprehensive curriculum covering five core areas:
Nutrition & Wellness: Hands-on meal preparation, principles of healthy eating, meal planning, and understanding diet's impact on overall health.
Personal Finance: Essential financial literacy skills, including budgeting, saving, basic banking, credit, and money management.
Textiles & Clothing: Fabric properties, garment care, and basic sewing skills through practical, hands-on projects.
Career Exploration & Readiness: Investigating career paths, identifying required professional skills, and setting future educational goals.
Interpersonal Skills & Relationships: Fostering effective communication, conflict resolution, teamwork, and building positive relationships at home, school, and work.
In 8th grade, students can choose to specialize by enrolling in one of our elective options:
The Food Science elective applies biology, chemistry, and physics to the production, processing, and evaluation of food. Organized into four major disciplines—Introduction to Food Science, Food Biochemistry, Food Microbiology, and The Future of Food Science—this course reinforces academic concepts through kitchen laboratory activities, real-world problem-solving, and career exploration.
Alternatively, students can enroll in Intro to Fashion Design, an engaging blend of creativity, garment construction, and sewing techniques. This course introduces students to fashion industry career paths, collaborative design challenges, and important contemporary topics such as fast fashion and sustainability.
