Summary of the Health Services Pathway
Health Service occupations are expected to grow rapidly. Students in this pathway will be exposed to numerous careers and post‐secondary options relating to occupations in the health service sector. Nursing, Pharmacy Technicians, Medical and Dental Assistants, Paramedics, Physical Therapists, Surgical Technologists, and others will be explored. Students will learn fundamental terminology and skills necessary to pursue further education and occupations in this career field. In this pathway, students also have the opportunity to earn a Medical Assistant Certification.
Classes within the pathway
Level 1- Foundations of Health Services (1 Credit)
This course is designed to provide a general overview of the many health-related occupations and facilities along with the special concerns of the healthcare worker. It introduces foundational topics such as medical terminology, the history of healthcare, legal and ethical issues, communication, teamwork and more. Students will receive an OSHA Healthcare Industry certification and the American Heart Association (AHA) First Aid certification.
Level 2 - Medical Assistant (Applied Medical Terminology) (1 Credit)
This course is a blended course that prepares and qualifies students to sit for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam. The program is designed to equip students with the skills necessary to assist patients in hospitals, medical clinics, assisted living environments and physician offices. Medical Assistants provide direct patient care as well as assist the physician with filing, recording, patient scheduling for appointments and specialized testing. Students will receive the and American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and have the option of pursuing a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license through Gateway Technical College.
Level 3 - Health Services Occupations (1 Credit)
This course reinforces skills learned through the capstone or apprenticeship experience. Coursework builds upon topics covered in Foundations of Health Services and Medical Assistant including leadership, teamwork, professionalism, wellness, and patient care. Students will create and present a professional portfolio of their work and experiences through the health services pathway. Students will earn a WI prevent Blindness Vision Screening certification.
Medical Terminology Elective (1 Credit)
This course is designed to provide practice in forming, analyzing, and reconstructing medical terms with an emphasis on spelling, definition, and pronunciation. It will introduce operative, diagnostic, therapeutic and symptomatic terminology of all body systems. Course will familiarize students with the causes, signs, and symptoms of diseases of the major body systems as well as their diagnostics, treatments, prognoses, and prevention of common diseases.
