The Department of Economics of D.G. Ruparel College started its journey in 1952 at the time of inception of D.G. Ruparel College.
We offer Economics as a subject at undergraduate level to students belonging to Arts, Commerce and Science stream. Our department is one of the few colleges in Mumbai which offers the subjects of Quantitative Economics and Econometrics taught by well qualified faculty. The department included Ex-Principal Dr. Sule and Dr. Prakash Salvi, PhD guide, as our faculty members.
The core papers includes Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Quantitative economic analysis, Mathematical economics, Development economics ,Contemporary issues in Indian economics ,International economics ,Financial economics.
Among the electives there are Elementary Quantitative Techniques, Econometric Methods,Environmental economics, and Descriptive statistics.
The course is thus self -contained and adequately designed to meet the highest standards of demand in the world of academics on the one hand and prove capable of meeting the needs of industry in general, on the other.
Apart from regular theoretical and practical classes, the department organizes lectures by eminent speakers, educational visits, book reviews and many such other activities.

Program Objectives
Knowledge of Economic System: Enables students an ability to understand economic theories and functioning of basic microeconomic and macroeconomic systems.
Statistical and Mathematical Skills: Students acquaint with collection, organization, tabulation and analysis of empirical data. Teach use basic mathematical and statistical tools to solve real economic problems.
Econometric Applications: Acquaint with basic and applied econometric tools and methods used in economics. Students provided a foundation in applied econometric analysis and develop skills required for empirical research in economics. It also covers statistical concepts of hypothesis testing, estimation and diagnostic testing of simple and multiple regression models.
Development Perspectives: Delineate the developmental policies designed for developed and developing economics. The course also acquaints with the measurement of development with the help of theories along with the conceptual issues of poverty and inequalities.
Environmental Strategy and Management: This course emphasizes on environmental problems emerging from economic development. Economic principles are applied to valuation of environmental quality, quantification of environmental damages, tools for evaluation of environmental projects such as cost-benefit analysis and environmental impact assessments.
Perspectives on Indian Economy: Acquaint with basic issues of Indian economy and learn the basic concept of monetary analysis and financial marketing in Indian financial markets.
This course reviews major trends in economic indicators and policy debates in India in the post-Independence period.

The course leads to project work/ case studies based on empirical examples such as: Management of NPAs by banks, performance analysis of commercial banks, financial instruments- comparative analysis, performance of NBFI.
By the completion of the course, students can solve the economic problems by using mathematical techniques.
The application of these mathematical techniques will help them to analyse the real world problems and to bring out impeccable interpretations in any discipline.
