Welcome back!
This week, we will be settling into our new Reception classes.
We will use this story lot in our first half term as we explore our emotions and feelings:
In My Heart: A Book of Feelings
If you're not already, you'll become very familiar with these songs!
Let's introduce ourselves to our new friends.
How old are you?
Do you have any brothers or sisters?
Do you have any pets at home?
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?
This week we are going to start learning about our class animals!
What do they look like?
Where do they live?
What do they like to eat?
Once we have done our brainstorm, we will each create our very own class animal.
Here are some examples of how you could do it, but you can also think of your own way too! It’s entirely up to you.
Use paper and pencils
Use paints
Use junk modelling materials e.g. paper plates, boxes…
Make a mask
Follow some origami instructions
Use lego
When you have finished your creation, we can take a photograph and pop it in your WoW book!
This week we are going to be magicians!
We are going to learn a new word… Subitise. When we subitise, we say how many we can see without actually counting them.
Try subitising here...
Let’s play a game. I have 3 cups. Under each cup there are some very special gems.
First I will show you the gems, then I will use my magic to switch them all around and see if you can say how many there are when I lift each cup.
How quickly can you say the number aloud?
(Swap the cups around quickly for a minute. When you stop, can they point to the cup with, for example, three? Lift the cup and see if children can instantly say whether they are right.)
Throughout the week, vary the treasure under the cups. If the children are ready for larger numbers, this can be varied throughout the week too.
This week we will be working on our names.
If you would like an extra challenge, you could try to use some of your family or friends names too!
Phonics
We will be following the Monster Phonics programme. This week we will be introducing the following sounds:
S A T P
There are so many ways we can do this…
Make it using letter pebbles
Cut your letters from a magazine/paper
Copy your letters using pencils/pens/ paints
Trace the letters of your name with help from a grown up
Find your letters in the water/sand/slime
Build your letters using Lego
Other Ideas
One day you could do a scavenger hunt (either in classroom or larger area). Hide the children’s names and see if they can find them all. Remind them they are only allowed to collect their own names, but can help their friends if they recognise any other names that they find!
Some of you may already know our Caring Koala, but we have some new friends in our class who may not. This week we are going to be reminding each other how to be a Caring Koala.
Let’s take a look at this video
Here are some videos to support:
This week we need to work as a team to create some class rules. Let’s think about how we would like this to look. Does anybody have any ideas? Let’s brainstorm them all and then decide on our favourite ones.
Here are some ideas:
Be kind
Be helpful
Listen to each other
Share with each other
Move around safely
Use gentle hands
Use kind words
Take care of our classroom
Take turns to speak
Try to add a visual for each ‘rule’ you agree on with your class and have it displayed to use as a reminder.
Let’s check out our Makaton Signs for the week: Hello Song with Singing Hands.
This week we will focus on how the children are settling back into school.
