Moving-up to Reception
We are now nearly at the very end of our Nursery year...and what fun and learning we have done! Now it is time for us to think about our move to Reception and what we can do to get ready!
We like singing:
It is a very special week—because we’re getting ready for Reception! That means this week, we’ll have a chance to visit the Reception classrooms and meet some of the teachers who will be with you when you move up next year.
There are four classes in Reception: Fox Class, Hippo Class, Toucan Class, and Owl Class. What animal will you be next year? Let’s look at the teachers’ pictures in Reception. Do you know their names?
Let’s get creative and decorate the end of year poem very beautifully. It is for your wow book.
You are growing so big and tall—almost ready for Reception! In Reception, children do many things all by themselves. And guess what? We can start practising this week!
Here are some things you’ll try:
-Carrying your own water bottle to the playground and putting it in your class trolley all by yourself.
-Going to the toilet on your own—your teacher won’t go with you anymore, but we know you can do it!
-Getting your own snack when you're hungry and cleaning up when you’re finished.
We’re so proud of how independent you’re becoming. Let’s get ready for Reception together!
Move-Up Morning
Today is a very exciting day—it's time to find out which Reception class you'll be in! What animal will your new class be? Who will your new teacher be? Which of your friends will be in your class?
Let’s turn on our listening ears! I’m going to say the name of each class animal and show a picture of that animal on the carpet. If you hear your name, please make a line behind the picture. The animal you’re sitting with is your new Reception class—how exciting!
Are we ready to meet our new teachers? We’re going to go upstairs to meet them and spend the morning with them - playing, exploring, and having lots of fun together.
Let’s go!
Move-Up Day Activities
In our new classes, we will meet our new teachers and enjoy lots of playing and exploring together!
Activity 1:
Make Your Class Animal Hat
We’re going to make a special hat featuring your class animal to take home. Get creative and have fun!
Activity 2:
Storytime with Your New Teacher
Let’s turn on our listening ears and enjoy a lovely story with your new teacher. Sitting nicely, get ready to explore a new book together!
Now we are getting so big and grown up, we are almost too big for Nursery! Who can remember where we will be moving to after the summer holidays? RECEPTION! Let’s see if you can remember the Reception Teachers names:
Reveal the Reception Teachers Shape Game
The Reception teachers were hiding behind shapes, what shapes did you see? A circle, triangle, rectangle and heart. Let’s share a story that has some shapes in…
And finally, we can sing this song about shapes:
When we are in Reception, we will go to eat our lunch in the dining hall - how exciting! Today we are going to go for a walk up to the dining hall to look through the doors and see what we can see inside. On the way back from our walk why don’t we see what shapes we can spot?
Self Portraits
We have had a go at drawing ourselves several times this year already - so today we are going to see how we can make this one our best version!
Let’s have a look at the teacher’s self portraits. Can you work out which teacher is which?
What do they all have on their drawings?
2 eyes, 2 ears, 1 nose, 1 mouth and hair! Is their hair all the same? No.
Everyone’s hair looks different.
How would you draw your hair?
Is it long? Is it short? Is it curly?
Do you like to wear it in plaits or loose?
What else do we need to draw?
Our bodies!
Let’s sing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes together to see if we can remember what parts of the body we need to add to our self portraits.
Self Portraits
Using the mirror, have a look at yourself. What do you think you should draw first?
Remember, that you are drawing all of yourself today so make sure you leave space on the page for your body.
Let's do this as independently as possible. Is there anything else you want to add? Have a look at yourself again...is there anything missing in your picture?
Once you have finished your portrait, can you write your name on your artwork like an
artist? You can copy from your name card if that is helpful?
Makaton- Rice, noodle, soup
Squiggle
This week in squiggle we’re going to dance the letters h,m,n,r. These letters all have humps and are similar to the hump move we have done before, shall we practice doing the hump?
Now lets see if we can use the hump to write these letters. (demonstrate how to form the letters correctly and ask for volunteers to try) Now lets dance this letter, we are going to write it in the air, on the floor and then on the tables. You can do any letters you want or you can just practice the hump move. Are you ready?!
Phonics
I’m going to give everyone a different card (use items or cards made previously with the same initial sounds eg all s,a, t,p,i,n) make sure children know what the name of their object is. If i say another ite beginning with the same sound can you stand up, swap places etc. Now swap items with someone else, lets do it again.
This week in Tapestry we will be sharing some photos from our activities getting us ready for reception.
