Once Upon A Time
This term, we will learn to become storytellers and will focus on some traditional tales:
Goldilocks and the Three Bears
We also like singing:
Today we’re going to play an exciting game called Pass the Bean Bag, inspired by the story of Jack and the Beanstalk! Imagine we’re climbing up Jack’s giant beanstalk, passing the magic bean along to each other. Listen carefully to the music — sometimes we’ll pass the bean bag slowly, as if we’re sneaking past the sleeping giant. Other times we’ll pass it quickly, just like when Jack is escaping! And when the music tells us, we’ll switch directions and pass the bean bag the other way. Let’s all work together and have fun!
Now we’re going to create a beautiful piece of art for our WOW book, inspired by Jack and the Beanstalk! Let’s use the tissue paper to build our beanstalk, gluing the pieces carefully so it stands tall. When the beanstalk is ready, we’ll stamp our printed hands at the top to make the giant’s castle! Then, let’s add doors and windows to decorate our castle and make it look magical. This will be such a special piece for our WOW book — I can’t wait to see your amazing creations!
What book have we been reading this week? That’s right, Jack and the Beanstalk.
Can anyone remember what animal in the story laid a golden egg? Yes, that’s right — a hen!
What is the difference between a hen and a chicken? It’s a bit tricky, but a hen is a female chicken that lays eggs. But really, all hens are chickens — so let’s all pretend we are chickens and do the chicken dance together.
That was fun! Okay, I need a very special volunteer to be a chicken. Who wants to sit on the nest, do some good waiting, and lay an egg?
Uh-oh! The chicken is having problems laying an egg! Can everyone be Caring Koalas and help the chicken lay an egg? If we all sing this rhyme together, it might help. Let’s try:
“Chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken, lay a little egg for me,
Chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken, lay one for my tea.”
Amazing work, Nursery! I think the chicken has laid an egg! Let’s have a look.
Wow, the chicken laid an egg. Let’s open the egg and see what is inside. It’s a letter. What is the sound? Can we match the sound to an item on the carpet? Come on, chickens, we can do it!
Who else wants a turn? Who else is going to be a chicken?
In small groups, we are going to play a chicken game.
I have a chicken in its nest, and it is laying an egg.
Let’s sing this song together to help it lay an egg:
“Chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken, lay a little egg for me,
Chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken, lay one for my tea.”
Let’s lift the chicken to see if it has laid any eggs yet. It has! Let’s count how many eggs it has laid.
Everyone, please take one egg and open it up. What is inside? What sound do you have? Can you find something in the classroom that matches your sound? Who will be the quickest to bring back an item starting with the sound they have?
Well done!
Do you want to play again?
Today, we are going to going to look at shapes! Can you remember where the giant lives in our story 'Jack and the Beanstalk'? In a castle. Let's look carefully at this picture of a castle, what shapes can you see?
Now let's go on a shape walk.
Let’s recap the shapes that we have learnt this year.
Let’s try and find shapes like JJ. We will start with things inside our classroom.
Can you find me a square? 5,4,3,2,1!
Let’s see your squares!
Now can you find me a triangle?
5,4,3,2,1!
Let’s see your triangles!
Ok, now we are going to go for a nature walk around the school and see if we can find different shapes used in real life objects.
We can use the class ipad to take photos of the objects we find.
When Jack got to the top of the beanstalk, he found a giant's castle!
Today, we are going to use our magnatiles to create a castle for the giant. I wonder what shapes you will use to create your castle. Squares, rectangles, triangles?
In our story of the week the main character ‘Jack’ goes on an adventure at the top of the beanstalk! Well today, we will go on an adventure of our own! Hiding underneath this blanket I have a clue for you! Look at the shape…what do you think it could be? 1, 2, 3…surprise! If I wind it up and let it go, what happens? It turns and plays music. Does anyone know what it is called? A carousel! Today we will take the bus to go and play on the carousel, how exciting! Our carousel goes round and round, let’s all stand up and hold hands in a circle and sing some circle songs:
Here is our schedule for our exciting trip:

This week in squiggle we will be practicing the letters u and y. Demonstrate how to write these letters correctly and ask any children to come and have a go. Now we are going to squiggle dance these letters! Are you ready?
Now, what are rhyming words? You're absolutely right! Rhyming words are words that have the same ending sound.
Let's try some! Listen carefully to the end of the words.
Cat and Hat - Can you hear how they both end with '-at' sound? Cat, Hat!
Dog and Log - They both end with the '-og' sound! Dog, Log!
Run and Sun - Listen, '-un'! Run, Sun!
Let's see if we can find the odd one out here! Odd one out rhyming
This week we will be following your child's interest and observing what they have enjoyed learning in their classrooms.
