Once Upon A Time
This term, we will learn to become storytellers and will focus on some traditional tales:
Goldilocks and the Three Bears
We also like singing:
Can you remember what happened in the 3 Billy Goats Gruff story?
Retell the story with me.
Use the slides as prompts if needed.
Ok, now we have a special visitor today! We have the troll! (Teacher puts on the troll mask)
Say hello to the troll!
Is there anything that you would like to ask the troll?
Children will ask questions to the troll and the teacher will answer as if they are the troll. If stuck for questions, the TAs and Nannies can support.
“What do you like to eat?
Where do you live?
Why don’t you like people crossing your bridge?”
Would anyone else like to have a go at pretending to be the troll or the goats and answering questions?
Now that we’ve had a go at pretending to be the trolls and the goats, you can act out the story using the masks.
Can you retell the story and role play the different characters?
Don’t forget the repeated refrains!
Today, we are learning about prepositions so let’s watch this fun monkey video to help us learn.
Demonstrate on carpet 'on', 'in', 'under', 'next to', 'in front of' and 'behind' to the class using a troll and a bridge.
Let’s play this fun teddy game about prepositions.
In small groups or one-on-one, can you put the troll 'on', 'in', 'under', 'next to', 'in front' of and 'behind' the bridge.
Let’s think back—what story have we been learning this week? That’s right, The Three Billy Goats Gruff! And who lives under the bridge in our story? Yes—the scary troll!
Today, you are going to pretend to be the billy goats, and you’ll have a chance to cross the bridge. But first, you must ask the troll:
'Scary Troll, Scary Troll, may I cross the bridge?'
The troll will give you a special challenge. He might say something like:
'Only if you can find the letter that makes the /s/ sound!'
You’ll need to look carefully at the letters laid out on the river and choose the one that matches the sound. If you find the correct letter, the troll will let you cross the bridge!
Are you ready, billy goats?
Today we’re going to play a name game! Look — here is your special name card. Can you see the letters in your name?
We’re going to use these fun pegs with letters on them to build your name. You’re going to match each letter peg to the boxes on your card — one letter in each box.
Let’s say the letters in your name together. What sound does your name start with?
You can pick up one peg at a time and clip it to the card. This helps our fingers get stronger and helps us learn the letters in our name too!
When you’ve finished, we’ll read your name together — great work, everyone!
Squiggle- This week in Squiggle we are going to be doing the letters (c,o,a,d) these letters all start by going around first. Let's start by practising these letters on the board, demonstrating how to correctly form these letters. Now lets squiggle them! You could do all three, 2 or 1.
Phonics-
We're going to play a cross the river game now with the scary troll. This time we want to swim across the river. I will give you all some item cards with things beginning with sounds s, a and t. If you are holding a card starting with the same sound i say you need to quickly cross the river and find a space on the other side. If you cant find a space or dont cross the river the troll might get you!
(use items or cards we have used previously or can use these. Make sure there's enough for all children to have one card)
This week we will be observing your child in their maths and how they are able to understand and talk about prepositions.
This week in Makaton we will be learning the signs for Start, Finish, Help.
