We've selected a truly exceptional book for this special week—let's dive into the enchanting world of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle together.
Take a good look at the pictures. Can you see what yummy fruits the caterpillar eats?
Do you think the caterpillar made good choices on Saturday? And what do you think happens to the caterpillar after eating lots of sweets?
How did he feel when he finished eating his fruits? Yeah, he was still hungry.
Let's sing the caterpillar song. Can you wiggle like a caterpillar? Can you fly like a butterfly?
Let's play memory game.
Uncover two cards and discover if they match. Congratulations on earning a point when you find a matching pair! If the cards differ, simply flip them over and continue the playful challenge. Let the memory fun begin!
What book have we been reading this week? That’s right - The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Let’s read it again as we all enjoyed it very much.
Now, we are going to look at the life cycle stages of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. Let’s watch this video to help us understand more.
I have a Butterfly Life Cycle Toy and we need to put the pieces together in the correct order. Let’s look at what pieces we have? We have a caterpillar, a butterfly, a cocoon and an egg.
Can we remember what comes first?
Egg, well done!
And what comes next?
Caterpillar - good job!
The caterpillar comes out of the egg.
Which stage is next?
Cocoon - amazing, well done!
Yes, the caterpillar builds a house around itself called a cocoon.
Does anyone remember how long the caterpillar stays in the cocoon for? Two weeks!
And what comes next?
The butterfly
Yes, that's right the caterpillar comes out of the cocoon as a beautiful butterfly.
Now that we have completed it let’s look at the stages again. How many stages are there? Let’s count - 1, 2, 3, 4. We have:
1. Egg
2. Caterpillar
3. Cocoon
4. Butterfly
Let’s learn how to draw a butterfly. All together, we can practise drawing a butterfly on our whiteboards.
What does symmetrical mean? Symmetrical means they are the same on both sides.
Do you want to make your own beautiful and colourful symmetrical butterflies?
Let me show you how to do it.
1) Fold paper in half
2) Pick what colours of paint you want to use and using the paint, you can create dots, lines, squiggles, patterns, whatever you want. But, please remember, you can only do it on one half of the paper.
3) Fold paper in half and push hard.
4) Open the paper and wow, you have made a beautiful butterfly.
However, we are not finished yet but we have to wait until the paint is dry.
5) Fold your paper in half and using a pencil, draw half a butterfly on the paper - two butterfly wings.
6) Cut along the pencil lines and open the paper.
7) Glue the body and antenna onto the middle of the butterfly.
Look, you have made a beautiful symmetrical butterfly - good job!
Can you remember which story we are learning about this week? That’s right, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. In our story the caterpillar liked to eat lots of yummy things, let’s remind ourselves what they are:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Fruits
Here we have a very big and hungry caterpillar who thinks they can help to feed the caterpillar…but you need to use your counting skills! Here can you feed the caterpillar these yellow fruits, how many did I give you? Can you touch count them, now how many all together? Well done, time to feed them to the hungry caterpillar!
Now let’s sing this fun caterpillar counting song together
5 Little Caterpillars Jumping In The Mud
Let’s play feed the caterpillar game together in pairs. Remember I am going to give you a group of same coloured fruits and you need to count them and tell me how many fruits you have all together! Once you have counted them then you can feed them to the caterpillar. Let’s go!

This week, we are promoting a love of reading!
We have read lots of stories in class during carpet times. Each child was also able to spend one on one reading time with their teacher. We focused on noticing the print in books and joining in with repeated refrains in stories.
