Down in the Garden.
We will learn all about animals that live around our school, what plants need to grow and the importance of taking care of the natural environment and all living things.

Today, we’re starting an exciting new learning topic: "Down in the Garden." Together, we’ll explore so many wonderful things about nature.
Let’s begin with one of my favorite stories: "The Enormous Turnip."
What did the little old man plant?
That’s right! A turnip seed.
What made this turnip so special?
Great answer! It grew much bigger than all the others—it became enormous!
How many friends helped to pull the turnip?
Let’s count them all together!
Learn some signs: Garden, bird, tree, sky, flowers, bee, snail
Let’s take a nature walk around Ruby’s garden! We’ll use our looking eyes to carefully observe all the fruits and vegetables growing in our beautiful garden. Can you spot any that are growing enormously?
As we explore, let’s look for natural treasures on the ground, like sticks, flowers, and leaves. We’ll collect these special finds and use them for exciting activities in our tuff tray later!
Yesterday, we went on a nature walk around the school.
What things did we see?
What did you hear?
What did you collect?
Today, we are going to use the items that you collected to make a natural suncatcher.
We have lots of different shapes to choose from.
Can we remember the names of some shapes? Let’s listen to this song about different shapes.
Which shape would you like to use for your suncatcher?
Now we are going to use our treasure from yesterday to make our suncatcher.
Which shape have you chosen?
Can you feel the sticky plastic on our shape?
Let’s stick our treasure onto our shape.
After, we need to thread some string through our shape so that we can hang it.
Look how beautiful it looks when the sun shines through it.
Today we are going to learn how to subitize. This is where we look at a group of objects and shout out how many we have…without individually counting. Are you up for the challenge? Let’s go!
Let’s play a subitizing game with our fingers. When I shout out a number can you quickly hold up the correct amount of fingers? Now we can make this trickier…I see you have made a number 3 by holding up 3 fingers on 1 hand, can you think of another way to make 3? You could use 2 fingers on one hand and 1 finger on another hand! 2 fingers plus 1 finger equals 3!
Finally, let’s play this last subitizing game as a class.
Can you see all of our exciting loose parts on the table? We are going to make some nature soup together. But first, we need to see how many of each item we need to put inside our saucepan to cook! Lets roll the dice, what number can you see, don’t count out the dots just say what number you see! So now you need to take the same amount of the loose parts items and add them to your saucepan. Now for the next ingredient…roll the dice! Once you have all your ingredients you can take your saucepan to the role-play area and cook your soup… delicious!
Today, we are learning about scarecrows. Does anyone know what a scarecrow looks like? A scarecrow is a dummy which is usually made of sticks. It looks like a real person. It wears old clothes and is placed in fields to scare away the birds. The birds eat the seeds in the field but If they see the Scarecrow, they think it is a real person and are scared away. Do we know what farmers grow in the fields? That's right - corn, rice, fruit, vegetables and other things.
Lets read this Peppa Pig book to help us understand.
And now let’s learn a song about a Dingle Dangle Scarecrow. Let’s all join in and do the actions!
We are all going to make our very own Scarecrows out of shapes. I am going to show you how to do it and we can build it together naming the shapes and body parts as we go.
We are all going to make our very own Scarecrow Crafts out of shapes. What shapes will you use? What colour are the shapes? What body part do we need? Where does it go? How many do we need?
This week in our makaton we will be learning the signs for broccoli, carrot and tomato
Last week in our squiggle dance we focused on the spiral. Can we try to make this squiggle with our pens?
This week will observe each child's individual interests.
