Common Sense Education offer some insight into TikTok's daily screen time limit for under 18s. Here's some key findings:
This would cutdown about 1 hour 30 from teen girls scrolling time
Girls' relationships with social media are complicated: They know it's not the best for them, but it plays a huge role in their lives
Current mental health challenges mean more negative impacts from social media and more benefits like community or support
It's less about one platform over another: Instead, there are specific features (like location sharing, likes, endless scrolling, and photo filters) that girls feel impact them the most
The positive community, resources, and identity-affirming posts are all mixed up with racism and hate speech, so the content is mixed
There's some value in limiting the amount of time we spend on screens, but teens' mental health is more likely to be impacted by what they are doing, the content they see, and social media's overall role in their lives
We all have a role to play in helping kids understand how media and tech can impact their well-being. With that knowledge, they can seek out the benefits and minimise the harm
What we can do to help:
Be curious, not judgmental. Ask about your child's experiences with media and tech to build trust and connection (➡️ See our Awarness section)
Teach a digital citizenship lesson! And when there's no time for a full lesson, weave these discussions in when you can to get kids reflecting on which habits actually work for their well-being. Take a look at the Take Home resources at the bottom-right of these pages:

Refer students to a licensed professional if you believe they're struggling with their mental health. You're not expected to provide the professional guidance (nor should you, if you don't have the professional qualifications). But helping children know about the resources out there is so important
