When one teaches, two learn.
- Robert Heinlein
I have instructed, co-instructed and co-lectured multiple lab classes and seminars since I was a PhD student, for example microscopy, an introductory molecular biology class, and a metabolomics class on nectar compounds that I developed together with a Master’s student I was mentoring. I especially enjoy working with college and university students, since I love connecting the course content to newest scientific developments. In addition, I had the pleasure to successfully mentor several undergraduate and graduate students over the years.
Making learning accessible for everyone is my leading principle and motivates me to design my courses to be as inclusive as possible. This includes culturally responsive teaching, since it is especially critical for students from diverse backgrounds to be actively integrated into the learning process. To design my courses inclusive, I follow certain principles as part of my teaching philosophy: Creating a safe learning environment; actively engaging students in the learning process; honoring that everybody learns differently; and finally, sparking fascination for the topic.
I view teaching as a commitment to lifelong learning. For me this includes, among others, requesting feedback from my students and peers about my teaching and mentoring. Furthermore, I am constantly working towards improving my teaching skills, for example by enrolling in seminars about College Teaching. In addition, I am redesigning my teaching towards online learning and I am participating in workshops for example on how to make remote learning more active.
