Cases

For two research scenarios re-usable support material is available. For online roleplay after the COVID lock-down we developed material for further use. We are engaging with researchers to embed this material in courses, so if you want to develop your own, please contact us.

Case 1: Voice recognition and Parkinson

A PhD student in linguistics is interested in Parkinson’s disease. She has noticed that not only doctors but also any layman person can hear changes in the voices of Parkinson’s patients. She would like to build an algorithm that would detect early signs of Parkinson’s disease. Once the algorithm is developed, an insurance company approaches her to do a follow-up project. The insurance company would like to develop an app based on her algorithm to profile its clients.

The case is in Dutch and in English, but the role cards are only in English.

This case is loosely based on a real case with the aim to engage science and engineering students. After a preparatory session and instruction teaching assistants lead the roleplay sessions. The legal expert, Catherine Jasserand, was available online. She also developed key concept cards, which can be reused in other settings.

Case 2: Research in the classroom

In this case, the researcher wants to observe how student engagement and mentality influences learning English. To see how the relationship between involvement and mindset develops at a young age, she wants to film in a class with students between 14 and 16 years old. Asking consent from the parents is almost impossible to organise. In her funding application, she promises that an anonymous version of the dataset will be made public after the project.

This is based on a real case to align ethical and legal assessment in grey areas, document measures and build trust for all stakeholders. Powerpoint slides with a visualisation of the dataflow are available at request.

The role play was used during the minor Datawise and in the course Privacy Law. The case is in Dutch and in English, but the role cards are only in English.

Case 3: Shared responsibility

Because of the COVID lock-down we developed - with the assistance of a postdoc- an interdisciplinary session with online discussion groups about the shared responsibility for data protection in research for Research Master students in social sciences. We have produced an assignment with aligned learning goals.

Students prepared for this class in groups in which they described a low risk and a high risk research scenario in their field. Based on this session a training for supervisors will be organised.

Case 4: Research Integrity, Data Protection and Open Science in COVID research

During COVID we developed a multi-stakeholder roleplay based on the data protection impact assessment method with resources about risks and data protection in COVID research for PhDs in Social Sciences and Humanities. The Graduate School Academic Integrity course aims to explore how academic integrity is organised in the university. Next to fraud and plagiarism, it is relevant to explore new risks and uncertainties related to Open Science and data protection in the research data life cycle.

    1. Assignment

The roleplay was done in break out sessions in Blackboard Collaborate and was followed by a lecture on data management. The students submitted perceived dilemmas in their own field in advance and were enabled to choose a preferred role with relevant background information to prepare for the online roleplay.

Case 5: Balancing act

When internet started, XS4All was the platform on which people shared all sorts of information, also about their personal life. Now the platform is closing down. In this case, an experienced researcher in modern digital history wants to make this kind of digital heritage available for research. She has a broad network interested in developing good practices to overcome legal and ethical hurdles. And hopes others will join to give their perspectives on the best way forward.

The role play will be used during the How to balance academic freedom and data protection session on 21 June 2022. The case and role cards are only in English.
