The PIoneering Pop-Up Labs (PIPUL, /ˈpipəl/) constitute a collection of temporary experimental research sites in public spaces such as museums and festivals.
The (performed and planned) projects are related to the empirical investigation of artistic experiences (i.e.: art production and art appreciation) and the meaning of art.
PIPUL series aims at measuring and interpreting the complex interplay of people’s behavior, physiology, emotion, and cognition, on the one hand, and the characteristics of artworks (type, style, context, etc), on the other.
We want to lay the foundation for an empirical approach to measure art and aesthetic experiences of art appreciation and art-making through the combination of non-invasive technology for physical information and self-report tools.
The projects are carried out in collaborations with partners from the cultural sector whose mission is to use an interdisciplinary mindset to explore how people experience art and reflect on it.
