In many cases, you will record data in the field. You may record observation on paper or in an app. Recording on paper is recommended, you have a separate archive from you digital records, and is typically more robust under rough / dirty conditions
Some tips and tricks:
Write in field notebooks rather than on separate pieces of paper
Always write with a pencil, best with an eraser at the opposite end, this is waterproof and you can correct mistakes
Use a notebook with good paper quality, when having a chance of writing in the rain then use waterproof paper notebooks
Collect a particular dataset always in the same notebook
After a day of fieldwork, make photos of the pages that your written down that day to have a backup, in case you loose your notebook in the field.
Organise the scans of your field book in a pdf as an archive and backup of your data collection.
