Environmental solutions

vEGETATED SIDES

The sides of the pier of Holwerd are covered with concrete blocks. Even though some vegetation is working its way through, the esthetics are mediocre. It would be much more beautiful to cover them with sand and vegetation!

Another reason to do this is that the environment of the Wadden Sea does not naturally have rocky shorelines. This can possibly lead to alien species living on the pier, which is harmful for the environment. For example, the pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) or the Northwest pacific crab (Hemigrapsus sanguineus).

To prevent the sea from taking away the sand, brushwood groynes can function as small dikes under the water untill the plant roots are able to hold the sand.

pole hulas

The pillars of the pier elongation do not provide much opportunities for nature. But attaching pole hulas around the pillars can be beneficial for nature. Pole hulas are hanging strings that are fixed around pillars. The strings are 6mm thick and 55cm long and they are attached just above and below the mean low water level. They are colonized by blue mussels and seaweeds, which both create habitat and food for other species, like amphipods and fish.

Vegetated swales

When visiting the pier, it would be nice if you see more than concrete. Therefore we have the vegetated swales on top of the pier! A vegetated swale is a sloped surface with plants to aid against stormwater and flooding. So not only do they look nice, but they function as a drain in case of flooding. For example with the technique of ‘ENREGIS Vivo Stone flex’, which is a compact and mostly self-sustainable system.

Light under the pier

The shade underneath the pier can stop fish from crossing it and it is bad for photosynthesis. Thankfully, there are several ways to solve the shade under the pier.

A relatively easy method is to build the pier at least 1.2-1.5 meters above MHHW (mean higher high water) and there should be a minimum amount of pilings, which are placed as far apart as possible.

Other options are having Fiberglass grid material as decking on the pier, several kinds of seathrough dekking, metal halide lights, or reflective panels that distribute the light under the pier.
