Venue

The workshop will be held in De Biotoop, Vleugel F in Haren, near Groningen, the Netherlands (link to venue website). This building served formerly as the biology department of the University of Groningen, and currently is a space for, amongst other, individual exploitations such as by artists.

Having been a university building, it features spacious halls where lectures were delivered, and canteens for resting between sessions. This, in addition to its favorable location next to the botanical gardens (see below), makes it a great place for the workshop to be held.

How to get there

From Groningen Station, take bus 51 in the direction of Assen. (This bus has regular service at 30 minute intervals.) Then get off at the stop Hortus, walk towards the south. This bus ride takes approximately 25 minutes. The venue will be on your right-hand side.

You can pay for bus either at the driver (no cash accepted), or by pre-buying your ticket on the website 9292. As start, set Groningen Hoofdstation (or another suitable origin), and as destination Hortus.

Hortus Botanicus Haren

Our venue is located next to the historic Hortus Botanicus Haren, a botanical gardens previously owned by the University of Groningen. Founded in the 17th century by an apothecary originally inside Groningen city center and later meant for academic purposes, due to size constraints it was moved to the smaller village of Haren just to the south at the start of the 20th century. Over time it has grown to its current size of 14 hectares; to this day, it remains the largest botanical gardens of the Netherlands.

The botanical gardens consists of several themed gardens, freely accessible to the public. These include a Celtic garden, the superb Laarman garden—boasting over 1.100 species of trees and shrubs from around the world—, an arboretum, a water garden, a rock garden, and notably a Chinese garden. This last one is the largest of its kind outside of China, and was designed in the 1990s by Chinese planners. After much needed maintenance was performed on the gardens, it had a festive reopening in May of 2025—less than one year ago! See also the webpage of Hortus Haren for further details.
