Prizes

Why should I participate?

Large face-to-face events remain impossible.

But we still want to enjoy the multiple benefits offered by the PG conference, which include:

  • gaining confidence in presenting our work

  • learning how to 'translate' our research so that non-experts can understand it

  • demonstrating the impact our work can make in the field of study and beyond

  • building our curriculum vitae

Science dissemination as a public good responsibility

Postgraduate education is subsidised by taxpayers because having a group of highly skilled knowledge creators is good for the country and the planet.

But it's only as good as the quality of that knowledge and the extent of its dissemination.

Most academic communication is between experts in academic books, journals and conference presentations. This is good because it is in such communities that specialised knowledge is produced, shared and built.

However, if we ONLY speak to each other, how does the average person understand the value of research? How can we build trust in science in a world of fake news and anti-intellectualism if we cannot translate our work in ways that make sense beyond the academy?

Gaining skills

Translating research for a multi-disciplinary audience is a central goal of science.

Being able to present our work confidently is key to building trust in universities.

Sharing our research and listening to others present their work from across disciplines is an important graduate attribute.

Conference presentations are important for building a CV
