About Us
Tautai Pacific RTLB is a team of Pacific RTLB (Resource Teachers: Learning & Behaviour) who collaborate across clusters to support our Pacific communities. Established in 2018, we have since expanded to create a new group, Tautai+ RTLB, to serve and support all RTLB and educators across New Zealand who work with Pacific students and families.
Tautai Pacific RTLB provide Pacific resources for use by all educators and families to develop their knowledge of Pacific language, culture and identity.

Brief Descriptions of our teams:
Tautai Toa is a leadership group with representatives from across clusters. This small team drives new initiatives that are carried out in the larger teams.
Tautai Pacific RTLB is a group of Pacific RTLB across clusters who meet regularly for professional development and collaboration to better serve our Pacific communities.
Tautai+ RTLB is open to all RTLB across Aotearoa. As the name says, this is Tautai Pacific RTLB plus all RTLB who are interested in improving engagement and outcomes for Pacific communities across the motu.
Pacific families and students are at the heart of all that we do at Tautai Pacific RTLB. We act in service to the Pacific communities to support their success.
Tautai Pacific RTLB
In 2018, Malia Tuala, the previous Cluster 6 Manager, put out the call for all Pacific RTLB to gather together to create a culturally supportive network to talanoa, connect and do something. Our Tautai Pacific meet regularly to network, collaborate and create. Tautai Pacific allows us to bring together our collective wisdom, knowledge and experiences.
Tautai is a Samoan term that refers to master fishers who have expert knowledge in reading the weather, the tide, the sea, its movement and also what lives in the sea. They are also experts in designing tools for catching fish and seafood. Fishing is a communal and collective activity and the village is involved in making the tools, going to the sea, gathering the kai moana and sharing food with the village.
Tautai is also a master coordinator of time, resources and people.
The work of Tautai is anchored on three Key Shifts in the Action Plan for Pacific Education;
Key Shift 2: Confront systemic racism and discrimination in education,
Key Shift 3: Enable every teacher, leader and educational professional to take coordinated action to become culturally competent with diverse Pacific learners, and
Key Shift 5: Grow, retain and value highly competent teachers, leaders and educational professionals of diverse Pacific heritages.
We are at a stage now where we want to cast the net wider to support our RTLB beyond Auckland to design better tools to provide more and better for our Pacific communities.
From the Ministry of Education, to Massey University, to the RTLB, we are all part of weaving and strengthening this net.
Tautai+ RTLB
In 2022, Tautai Pacific RTLB cast their net wider to create a new culturally supportive network for all Pacific Liaisons from the 40 RTLB Clusters across Aotearoa.
We have regular Zoom fono for RTLB and educators to support their engagement with Pacific communities.
Tautai+ RTLB Face to Face 2025
In 2025, Tautai+ RTLB gathered all of the available Pacific Liaisons from Whangarei to Invercargill to meet in Tamaki Makaurau.
