Meet the School Social Worker

Dear Parents and Guardians, 

I want to extend a warm welcome to all RSU 87 Elementary School families. My name is Ashley Exley and I am the School Social Worker at Carmel Elementary (CES), and Suzanne M. Smith Elementary School (SES). I have created this site as a resource for you and your child. 

As a school social worker, my primary responsibility is to promote the social, emotional, and academic development of your child. This can be done in the classroom, small group, or individual setting. The goal of this work is to create a safe and healthy environment for learning.  In addition to supporting our students, I am also available to meet with parents who have questions or concerns regarding their child.  

Please note that my schedule is shared between Carmel Elementary and Suzanne M. Smith Elementary. I am at Carmel Elementary on Monday, Wednesday afternoon, and Friday. Tuesday, Wednesday morning, and Thursday I am in Levant, at Suzanne M. Smith Elementary.  However, you can reach me at either school anytime.

Role of the School Social Worker

School Social Workers are trained mental health professionals who can assist with mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic, and classroom support, consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators as well as provide individual and group counseling/therapy. The School Social Worker may also: 

• CONFLICT MEDIATION

• CRISIS INTERVENTION

• SUPPORTIVE PYSCHO-EDUCATIONAL COUNSELING
  Individual or small group counseling to support student needs

• CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS 

• COMMUNITY REFERRALS 

Who can refer a child to the School Social Worker

• Parents/Guardians

• School Personnel (i.e. Principal, teachers)

• Community Agencies (i.e. Case manager, counselor) 

• Student Self-Referral
