Whale Art

Check out this adorable orca puppet made up by Mrs. McClure! Here is how she did it:

  1. She used an outline of an orca to trace the shape onto stiff paper. (You can use the top of a pizza box, or the side of a cereal box to save money and help whales.)
  2. After she cut out her paper whale shape, she used it to trace the outline onto black felt. She cut it out.
  3. She glued the black felt onto the stiff paper. Then she cut out the white shapes and glued those on last. If you look carefully, she used a small black circle on top of a white circle for the eye.
  4. Then she made the "blow", which is the spray of moist air made when the whale exhales out of its blowhole or blowholes.
  5. Last step is to attach a popsicle stick, or a stick from your yard.

Now you can tell a great whale story! You could make some other puppets just the same way, and make up your own whale puppet show.
Do killer whales have baleen or teeth? One blowhole or two? If you don't know, use the resources on Whales in the Gulf of Maine page to find out!
