The Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, conducted by Jackie Townsend
The Portland Youth Wind Ensemble began out of a need in the greater Portland area for a select wind ensemble for talented young wind players. It is dedicated to refining concert techniques through a sophisticated repertoire of wind and band literature. The principal chair musicians are also members of PYSO.
Weekly rehearsals during the academic year are Wednesdays from 7:30 - 9 p.m.
My name is Debbie Bartlett. I taught elementary and middle school grades at Durham Community School and I am recently retired. I am a board member, and flute player, with the Cumberland Community Band.
We are a group of 40-50 musicians who enjoy playing weekly in the Greely High band room. Led by Michael Perfetti, CCBand began several years ago at a multi-generational concert at Greely, and has continued to grow and flourish since. We continue to welcome high school students from Greely, Yarmouth, North Yarmouth, Falmouth and Freeport and other schools to our practices and performances. Practices happen on Monday nights at Greely High School by the Performing Arts Center from 6:30-8:30.
We perform before audiences each year in the greater Portland area, playing fun and challenging marches, show tunes, and other selections which Michael finds challenging and enjoyable.
It would be our pleasure to extend an invitation to students in your program. Would you be able to forward this to them, along with my invitation?
All questions are welcome. Thank you for your time and feedback.
I’m Vinny Fuerst, music director and conductor of the Portland Community Orchestra. We have just begun our 4th season and it’s always at this time that we extend an offer to students in southern Maine to join the PCO, either as possible featured soloists, or as participating members of the orchestra. We have grown over our first four years to over 30 players, with a full contingent of strings (though we always welcome more violins, violas or cellos!) and a small, but growing wind section. We do have openings for clarinetists, French horn players, trumpets, and baritone horns, if you have any talented players in your ensembles who might be interested in an open seat to play symphonic orchestral music. This year we will be exploring music by Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Handel, Vivaldi, Purcell, and others. We also regularly feature student vocal soloists in both our regular series concerts and our Christmas concert (which usually features, among other things, selections from Handel’s Messiah).
