The Humanities Defined:
The humanities encompass those disciplines which seek to explore the stories of people. They include history, literature, art, philosophy, music, ethics, and world languages. To study the humanities is to consider what it means to be human and to make sense of the world and our place in it. The humanities allow us to experience the world and other people in ways we might never imagine as we explore the stories of cultures, groups, and individuals from throughout time and around the world.
“Stories matter. Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity.”
- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, "The Danger of a Single Story" TedTalk, 2009
