Elementary school counseling supports the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development of ALL students during their formative years. School counselors play a vital role in ensuring that children feel safe, supported, and ready to learn, through our multi-tiered systems of supports. We use school-wide data to inform interventions and classroom lessons.
At KES, school counselors help reinforce our school-wide expectations - Respectful, Responsible, and Safe - in every classroom.
We also support the use of Responsive Classroom and Restorative practices across the school.
The counselor works with students, teachers, and families to make sure each child has what they need to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
Here are just a few examples:
Supporting students’ growth: School counselors help children understand and manage their feelings, solve problems, and build confidence.
Teaching: We lead classroom lessons and small groups on topics like friendship, emotions, and making good choices.
Working with families and teachers: We partner with parents and staff to support students’ learning.
Provide one-on-one support: School counselors can check in with students who may need a little extra encouragement or help through a tough time.
Creating a caring school community: We promote school-wide expectations (respectful, responsible, safe), and help build a positive school climate.
As a parent, you can think of the school counselor as a partner in your child’s growth and success. The counselor is here to support your child’s emotional well-being, social skills, and learning—and to support you along the way, too!
