Mrs. Shimkus' READ 180 Class

12/6/2019

Students will continue stations next week.

  • Small Group: We began the 2nd half of Workshop 5: Contagion. Students are learning about disease prevention and precautions. There will be a vocabulary quiz, Workshop assessment, and creative short story assignment at the end of the unit. We should be able to finish this Workshop before going on Winter Break

  • Independent Reading: Students are expected to read every day. They are welcome to read a library book or one from home or my classroom, but they are expected to COMPLETE books. Students will complete a daily reading log on paper. This will be turned in before break. Upon completion of a book, they must also complete a short summary in Google Forms and take a reading comprehension quiz over the book.
  • We installed the App Learning Ally on students’ chromebooks today. This gives them access to 1000s of popular audiobooks. This is also an App they can download to their phones to access these same Rockwood accounts. Their username is the same one they use for Chromebook login, but their password is Rockwood.

  • Student Application: The computer program placed students in the appropriate level, based on their Reading Inventory, in the Student App. Students are expected to work for 20 minutes every day, focused on improving their reading ability through the program. *Students should have completed 3 segments by this point in the year. By the end of December, they are expected to have completed at least 5 segments. Students without 4 segments completed will have missing assignments in Infinite Campus, which can have a drastic effect on final semester grades. **Students DO have access to the student app at home and should do some extra work to be sure to finish these segments before break.

Homework: Students should read every night at home! The best way to become a better reader is to READ! Have them give Learning Ally a try!

  • We installed the App Learning Ally on students’ chromebooks today. This gives them access to 1000s of popular audiobooks. I taught them how to find books to add to their bookshelf, and many were excited to start using it in class today.

After reviewing the time spent in the APP by each student, students’ use of time was discussed in class and adjustments were made to our classroom routines. Many students are choosing to not use their time (or chromebooks) wisely in class. Students who continue to fail to use their time wisely in class will have to see me at lunch to complete their daily classwork.

*Students should have completed 2-3 segments by this point in the year. By the end of December, the expectation is that they will have completed 5.
