I. Reading Assignments

Today you will begin reading your partner book. I hope that reading with a partner allows you to feel connected to school. I also hope that working with a partner helps you analyze a story using the cognitive reading strategies you have been using all year.

1. Set up for partner reading: Just like you did during literature circles, you and your partner will read the book over the course of four weeks. That means you will read through April and finish the book on May 1st.

Divide your book into fourths and agree on where you will stop each week. Mrs. Mecey will be proud of your math skills!

  • I/4 by April 10th
  • 2/4 by April 17th
  • 3/4 by April 24th
  • 4/4 by May 1st

2. Reading Log: You are responsible to read for 30 minutes Monday through Friday. Start with your partner book and add your independent novel when you finish your partner reading for the week. Record all reading in the log every day.

1. Reading Assignments

I sent you an email on Wednesday with the name of your partner and instructions regarding your partner book. You need to check out a book with your partner and email me the title and author. You cannot move on next week without having accomplished this step. If you have reached out to your partner and he or she is not responding, I need to know today. I can help.

1st and 3rd Blocks: Students are now able to log into Learning Ally. That resource has A LOT more books, and it would be much easier for you and your partner to choose a book there. PLEASE LOG INTO LEARNING ALLY ONCE AGAIN TODAY. The directions are on Google Classroom in the first assignment under Reading.

Read your independent book for 30 minutes and record it in the log.

2, Writing in the Pandemic Journal

Slide: Today you will reflect on your personal experience of the pandemic. What is hard for you right now? What is going well? You will do this for seven weeks, so think about it during the week so you are ready to respond on Friday.

You must also move the Google Slides you worked on this week into the "Pandemic Journal: Final Product" slideshow at the top of "4th Quarter Writing: Pandemic Journal". I will grade your work in the final product each Friday.

Student Work: Due Monday, March 30th

2. Writing: Pandemic Journal

This journal will contain your writing assignments for the rest of the fourth quarter. It will become a primary source document you will look back on twenty years from now. It will allow you to share with others what you were thinking and feeling as you lived through a shared national experience that your children will probably study in their history books (in the same way your parents look back on shared national events such as 9-11). It is something I want you to invest in and keep for the future.

As such, it will be the 100 point summative informative writing assignment for the quarter.

You will access this assignment in Google Classroom under the title "4th Quarter Writing: Pandemic Journal". One group of slides is due per week. Reading and writing are skills. You must practice them daily, so please only do one slide per day!

* On Monday, explain in your own words (before you do research) how you would explain what is happening in the world right now. There is a 5 sentence minimum.

* On Wednesday, place a photo in the second slide that is related to your description of what is happening in the world. Name the source of the photo and add a link for it at the bottom of the slide.

* On Friday, describe your personal experience of the pandemic. Use at least 3 sentences to describe what is hard right now, and at least 3 sentences to describe what is going well.

*You have one more important job to do EVERY Friday. You will move the slides you did that week into your final Google Slideshow presentation that I will grade. I will not be grading it all at once at the end of the quarter. Therefore, you must move it every Friday in order to get credit for that week. If you have trouble moving your work, email me and I will show you how to do it on ZOOM.

Here is the link to a video that explains 2 different ways to move Google Slides from one presentation to another.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_n8_DW78GA

I will be grading the work you place in the final Google Slide presentation each week. You must move it there in order to get credit.

3. Partner Reading

You will access this assignment in Google Classroom under the title "4th Quarter Reading".

This week you must check out a book online. You don't have to read the book, but you must demonstrate you are able to accomplish it. See Google Classroom for the online resource I have set up for your class. Directions on how to access that resource are also there. I supplied directions for "Learning Ally" and Rockwood's Destiny website for Blocks 1 & 3, and I supplied directions for Destiny and the St. Louis County Library for Block 4. If you have problems accessing those sites, email me and I will ZOOM with you.

Next week you will start reading and recording your thoughts about a book with a partner. This will be similar to a literature circle. You will need to be finished in 4 weeks. That means you start April 6th and finish May 1st. Just as we did during literature circles, you will divide the book into 4 sections in order to read one section each week.

This week, read your independent novel for 30 minutes Monday through Friday. Record what you are reading in the reading log. If you don't have one, check one out using one of the online resources I provided or read nonfiction articles online and put the name of them in the reading log.

I will be grading the work you do in these logs on a weekly basis.

Language Arts Newsletter for Alternative Learning Plan

March 25, 2020

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

What a challenging time we are facing! I hope you are all safe and are managing the impact of the pandemic well. I have felt surprised and grieved by all the physical and financial turmoil people are experiencing through this unexpected pandemic, yet I am also encouraged by the way people are supporting and caring for one another, too. I understand this experience requires significant adjustments for you and your family, and that learning online is one more item added on that list. I want to make it as easy as possible for my students to continue growing as readers and writers as they prepare to meet their academic and career goals.

ZOOM Meeting

I am deeply disappointed not to be in the classroom this week with each of you, students. I miss you! Our team will be hosting a live video conference this Thursday, March 26th at 11:00 am so we can connect with you and see your face. We need to know if you are able to respond to us on a virtual platform that is Rockwood approved, so we are going to use the ZOOM remote conferencing service.

In order to join the conversation, you will need to click on the link below. Once you open that link, you will need to allow ZOOM to access your microphone and your audio, so say YES to those prompts if given. Once there, you will see your 7 Maroon teachers waiting to greet you. :)

Join Zoom Meeting: https://zoom.us/j/454586281

Language Arts Curriculum

I, and other teachers and staff members around the district, have been undergoing training on how to utilize the online learning resources that will help us implement the Alternative Learning Program created by the district, and I look forward to resuming classes tomorrow on Thursday, March 26th.

For more information on the ALP, you can visit its homepage on our district website.

Students, we are rolling out our curriculum slowly. This Thursday and Friday I will only post one or two questions on Google Classroom per day that you need to answer. They are worth ten points each. I need everyone to respond so I know who is tracking with me. I will also post a video on Friday or Monday explaining our curriculum goals for reading and writing.

Office Hours

We want to be available to meet the needs of our students, so the teachers on our team are dividing up office hours to allow students and parents to contact us without overlap. During these hours, we will be sitting by our computers waiting for you to reach out through emails or ZOOM conferencing. If those hours don’t work, you can always email us at any time, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

My office hours are posted on Google Classroom at the top of the page so students can see them, but I will also post them on an attachment in this letter in case parents want to print that document and keep it handy.

I am also happy to speak to you on the phone. Since I don’t have access to a Rockwood line, I can call you using *67. Your phone will say you are receiving a call from an anonymous source, but if we have arranged the appointment by email you will know to answer the call.

Parent and Student Newsletter

Some of you may not have felt the need to utilize our team newsletter in the past, but it may be a valuable resource during this unprecedented season. The link below opens to the home page. From there you can access by hyperlink each teacher’s page.

https://sites.google.com/rsdmo.org/team7rednews/teachers-site-pages

Students, all of your teachers miss you, so you may receive multiple emails regarding this same ZOOM meeting. We all wanted to reach out. I look forward to seeing you this Thursday at 11:00 am!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Hughes

Although they will spend most of their time reading The Outsiders in class, students need to bring their independent reading novel to class every day just in case they have time to read it.

Writing: Students will be responding to prompts about themes in The Outsiders in their Notebook and in graphic organizers on Google Classroom. They will finish the quarter writing an analytical essay on a theme in the novel; it is their largest point assignment for the quarter.

Speaking: Students in Third and Fourth Block are preparing to give their first Book Talk recommending a novel to their peers. They are currently reading their novel; presentations will begin this week on Monday, September 16th.

Vocabulary: Students in Third and Fourth Block are learning how to use prefixes to decode unknown words. This week they will work on "super". Students fill out a graphic organizer that is in their green folder in the classroom, and place a post on the class Padlet Wall. I will collect their organizers to grade them on October 11th. The summative quiz will be the same day.

Grammar: We begin class each day with a warm-up related to grammar. We are currently reviewing parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, articles, prepositions and conjunctions. These are important because we need a common language as I discuss students' work with them and teach them new concepts (such as complex and compound sentences).

Week of August 12th

Our first week is finished. I was so happy to meet your child and get started on the school year. The first two days we spent time getting to know each other with games such as Fan-N-Pick and Stand Up/Sit Down. In addition, the entire building participated in Falcon Creed lessons. Those lessons covered expectations regarding students being safe, respectful, and responsible. Finally your child wrote a friendly letter that will help me get to know him or her better.

In addition to relational activities, we began exploring how to make our classroom run effectively. We came up with expectations and norms together, and I will be posting those on the wall. Students chose leadership jobs that will help our classroom run smoothly, such as passing out materials or running errands.

Finally, students chose a target area to focus on this quarter in the areas of writing and reading. Next week they will move on to vocabulary, grammar, and speaking. I explained what they will be learning and how we will do that in my class. The following week we will begin practicing those skills by reading The Outsiders as a class.

I hope you can attend Curriculum Night at our school on Wednesday, August 26th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. I consider myself a partner with you as we work together for the success of your child, and I would love to meet you. I will give you a brief summary of how he or she will develop reading, writing, and speaking skills in my classroom. You will have a chance to see the room your child spends time in every day. I hope to see you there!
