HOSA encourages students interested in all areas of medicine to compete in a variety of unique competitive events. Each student must choose one event to participate in, and one event only (recognition events are the only exception to this rule).

Health professions events allow competitors to have a fantastic deep dive into the life and work of a certain medical specialization. Competitors will be asked questions based on the distinct career they choose, and the events are a great asset for students that are looking to learn about a specific line of work, including everything from dental science to sports medicine and everything in between.Â

However, where health professions events focus on a certain medical specialization, health science events focus on the concepts and core ideas that underly all of medicine. These events are a perfect jumping-in point for new members as well as amazing events for returning members because they provide invaluable background knowledge for all aspiring health professionals!

Emergency preparedness events are for students that are interested in a more hands-on approach. These events prepare students for emergency circumstances that require quick and direct action in order to save lives. Students will be evaluated on how well they perform life-saving maneuvers as well as how well they know certain protocols and rules for these dangerous situations. For students interesting in becoming EMTs and paramedics, these events are especially for you.

As stated in the name, leadership events help students develop the skills of a strong leader. This is practiced through events that encourage students to be able to clearly and effectively get their ideas across to a panel of judges, either orally or through a written piece. Leadership events also focus heavily on presentation skills which not only benefit aspiring medical professionals, but even students who maybe are not certain if they want to go into medicine in the first place.

Looking to work with a group of friends? Teamwork events are amazing bonding experiences while still offering great learning opportunities for students. Being the most diverse category, this group of events has multiple completely different styles of tournaments. Recognition events are unique from all other forms of competition at HOSA because these events are less about competing with fellow schools and more about improving the community around a school itself.
