The training provided in 5th Grade Orchestra continues in this course, however this is also the time for beginners to join in on the fun! Students receive instruction in music reading-skills, production of a good tone, bowing, and left hand techniques. You will be amazed at how quickly new skills are gained from simply playing your instrument every day in class.
"The work we do in class is created for both individual and group experiences. While we focus on grade level concert pieces and skill, students are able to work at their own pace. This means 6th grade students have the ability to work on 7th and even 8th grade level material if they so choose! When students make the effort to work ahead and take learning into their own hands, they are pushed to new heights and achievement."
There are many new opportunities for students to play outside of school in honors groups, as well as with small groups of friends throughout the year. There are also three concerts during the school year that 6th Graders will play for (even virtually if necessary), and more that they are free to join in on. Attendance at all performances is required and part of the class grade as covered in the Rockwood School District Attendance Procedure for Secondary Music Programs.
Students must provide their own instrument, book, and supplies. However, if this is ever a problem we will work with families to help get supplies where needed. Money should never be an issue when helping students explore their passions.
So, you've been in strings for 3 years now in elementary school... why continue on into middle school orchestra? Here are a few reasons that RSMS students love being in orchestra:
We meet every day for almost 50 minutes!
We play more challenging music, and we don't have to learn the basics again!
There are more people in class, so you're never alone on your part and you get to hear all of the other parts every day
Cello and bass players get to use school instruments, you don't have to lug those huge instruments back and forth anymore!
No practice records
Field trips to see the symphony and perform for large group ensemble, Six Flags Music in the Parks, and more!
Be a part of an awesome community!
More performance opportunities: Fall Concert, MIOS, Large Group Festival for 7th & 8th Grade, Spring Concert, and the 8th Grade Out of Town Trip!
6th graders learn to tune their own instruments
Being in middle school orchestra leads to opportunities to perform in more challenging groups outside of school, like the All Suburban Orchestras and Young People's Orchestras through Webster Community Music School
