Scope and Sequence for the year:
September: Autobio poem; short story and author study (O.Henry) focusing on plot and irony; sentence review and practice; paragraph writing review and practice; some parts of speech review; parts of the sentence. We will also explore and define literary terms. There will also be a biweekly Article of the Week.
October: Short story and author study (Edgar Allan Poe); and oral book commercials (11/17). Biweekly reading and Biweekly Article of the Week. Some parts of sentence review. Begin second fiction book and work on plot diagram book report due 11/28.
November: ; Continue/finish Edgar Allan Poe and enrichment activities, all of which focus on mood/atmosphere in writing; continue with Article of the Week and paragraph writing. Continue with parts of sentence; plot presentations for second fiction book. Begin book report number three, nonfiction slideshow, due 1/16.
December: Various film clips, videos and historical enrichment lessons for Pearl Harbor, World War II, Nazis, and the Secret Annex/Anne Frank's family; continue with Article of the Week and sentence structure/paragraph writing.
January: We will be focusing on The Diary of Anne Frank (dramatic adaptation), while pursuing numerous enrichment activities such as a virtual tour of the Annex, an interview with Holocaust survivor Eli Wiesel; we will continue with Article of the Week and paragraph writing focusing on not only the story of Anne Frank, but also the elements of a play. Continue parts of the sentence concepts with practice and quizzes. Book report three is due 1/15; begin book report four.
February: Time to read nonfiction books; finish Anne Frank (dramatic adaptation) and the second half of the film Forget Me Not--the Anne Frank Story; unit exam and writing component for Anne Frank unit focusing on character development; paragraph writing (persuasive) and adding supporting details to the main details (move from a hamburger-style paragraph to a full personal essay); continue with Article of the Week and paragraph writing. Parts of the Sentence review and FORWARD exam practice. Also, we will be learning to use noredink. and quill.org Book report four is due Feb. 26.
March: Working on book number five (due April 22); learn about and write an Irish limerick; work to string together paragraphs into a essay (argumentative); define, understand, and utilize literary elements; continue with Article of the Week and paragraph writing. FORWARD exam practice and prep. (commas, subject/verb agreement, simple/compound sentences, misplaced modifiers)
April: Choose final book for reports; FORWARD exam ; mythology introduction with history assignments; begin The Adventures of Ulysses; continue with Article of the Week and paragraph writing.
May/June: Continue and finish with The Adventures of Ulysses; view a portion of The Odyssey; final independent novel and report; poetry (writing) unit (if time permits).
