For Algebra and Geometry, a calculator will be provided to use in the classroom. A student can use a cell phone for a calculator outside of class, which means it is not necessary to purchase a calculator.
In Algebra and Geometry class, a scientific calculator is required daily. The recommended brand if you're looking for a new one is a TI-30X. However, if your student already has a scientific calculator of a different brand or model, it should work fine. Also, they can use a cell phone calculator if they are not in class. These calculators range in price from $12-$20 and can be found at most department stores. See the following image of the algebra/geometry calculator.
In Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus classes, a graphing calculator is required. The recommended brand is a Texas-Instrument. Most common models of TI (Texas-instrument) are the TI-83, TI-83+, TI-84, and TI-84+, however a TI-86 is not recommended. A Sony or Casio or other models are not compatible with the TI that our class will be utilizing. These graphing calculators cost about 120 dollars. See the following image of the Graphing Calculator.
Used graphing calculators are sometimes available on-line or through Amazon.com, or a student may rent one from the math department. A rental graphing calculator costs $20 per semester or $40 for the entire year. The student keeps the calculator in his possession for the entire time and turns it back in at the end of the school year. Students can come see me in my room 154 if they're considering renting.
