Core Beliefs about Relationships and Learning: Relationships are foundational to learning. Parents are the child’s first teachers and play a significant role in their child’s literacy development. Maya Angelou articulates the impact of caring relationships so eloquently, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” My hope is that through my interactions with students, families and colleagues, is that people sense that I truly care for them and that I want the best for each and every child.
Core Beliefs about Reading and Writing: Students need to spend lots of time reading and writing. Students need opportunities to choose reading materials that they can and want to read. Students need clear teaching and modeling. The love of learning needs to be contagious in every classroom. Teachers need to demonstrate their own love of reading. I am determined to convey my love for learning and the exciting journey that books can provide to every student I encounter.
Core Beliefs about Determination: All students can grow and learn. Teachers should share how they overcame challenges and inspire their students to do the same. Mistakes are opportunities to learn. Taking risks is essential to learning. I love reading stories about real people who faced and overcame real obstacles in their lives. These stories can spur both children and adults on to do great things that they once thought was impossible. I communicate that it is ok to make mistakes because it gives us the chance to learn something new. Albert Einstein stated, "Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new."
