Curriculum

Rio Rancho Public Schools have adopted several curricula to help ensure our students master the standards. Our English/Language Arts curriculum is ReadyGen. Using mentor texts, students learn how to ask and answer questions surrounding details in a text. It also helps us begin to understand comparing and contrasting stories. We use Heggerty as our phonemic awareness component. Phonemic awareness is the ability for a person to manipulate and play with sounds to create words. We combine this with ReadyGen's Foundational Skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, and word study) to teach our students how to read.

We use Eureka math curriculum. Eureka is a fantastic math curriculum that focuses heavily on Kindergarten in teaching kids how to use and understand numbers. Kindergarten is very unique in that we have a set of standards that are only taught in Kindergarten. The Counting and Cardinality standards are ONLY kindergarten standards. These are truly the standards that all other standards are based off of, as they are the standards that teach us how to count and what each number means. We place a huge emphasis on those standards and also becoming fluent mathematicians when adding and subtracting within 5. Eureka does this in a very hands on manner that is so crucial to our students. We start with manipulatives (physical objects that are concrete), and then, we move to pictures, and then we move to just having the numbers. Bottom line - let your kiddos use their fingers! It builds automaticity and fluency!
