Dissecting Sheep Brains

Manning AIG students in grades 3 and 4 were able to dissect sheep brains as a part of our BrainWorks! unit. BrainWorks! is a classroom project that was funded through DonorsChoose.org. The project challenges children to explore the human brain and gain insight into the complexity of thinking and learning through a variety of learning experiences. We have also worked on making neuron models in order to understand how learning is stored in the brain and investigated in research projects based on Bloom’s Taxonomy and the six levels of thinking.

Reading about the brain allows students to learn about the brain, but holding a brain excites students and empowers them! Using the brain as a tool for understanding complexity is unforgettable. Students are usually a bit apprehensive when we begin the dissection, but it doesn’t take long before curiosity gets the best of them. Mrs. Wells said, "The students would take their sheep home if I let them!"
