The students in our third grade classroom have a close-to-the-real-thing economy called “Business Time.” The economy is based on a currency called Bonus Coupons. Children earn a paycheck each week by performing duties as students and can earn additional BCs by doing additional jobs such as financial adviser, public relations specialist, insurance agent, bank officer, data analyst, and more. The paycheck can be put in the classroom bank called Burney Bank to earn interest and saved, or spent on expenses like desk rental or purchase, insurance premiums, taxes, or something more fun. Student-citizens may find even more ways to earn money by checking out the Opportunities Board and can shop from our Menu. (listed below). Each week, disasters occur in the world outside the classroom and our students must be financially prepared for them as well. Our insurance company covers hurricanes, fires, and floods. Citizens who have policies are protected.
As the school year progresses, the citizens of Room 205 have the opportunity to earn additional pieces to expand their community such as a fully functional, three branch government, the opportunity to start their own businesses, and finish off with enjoying their retirement during our 205 Auction. We file income tax based on our year long income and develop a budget as we head into retirement, all with the goal of making our experience as true-to-real-life as possible.
The students of Room 205 learn about saving and spending , insurance, taxes, planning for the future, and preparing themselves to be financially responsible adults all the while think they are just having fun.
How can we earn BCs beyond our paychecks? How can we spend our BCs?
Forms for opportunities can be found on main Business Time page. Feel free to print out as often as you wish.

What is this passport?
In our reading program, Wit and Wisdom, we will explore four concentrations: The Sea, Outer Space, A New Home, and Artists Make Art. We will read, write, ask and answer questions, discuss, and use the arts to help us understand the world around us in a deeper way. This passport provides an opportunity to visit pieces of art at our own Cleveland Museum of Art that connect to our study. Students will have the chance to see pieces in person that we have studied, work by artists we have learned about, and connections to themes we will explore in class. There is no need to see all the pieces in one visit.
Instructions:
Visit the Cleveland Museum of Art with a special grown-up.
Plan out which pieces listed in the passport you’d like to see on this day. (No need to see them all in one day!)
Find a piece of art in the passport and sit or stand in front of it for at least 3 full minutes.
Notice every detail you can. Pay attention to how it makes you feel, what questions you have, what you think the artist may be saying to you, what materials are used, and why you think it is interesting. Note: When spending time with art, try not to ask yourself, “Do I like this piece?”. Instead, ask yourself, “What is the artist saying to me? What can I learn? How does this piece connect to its time?”
Share your thoughts with your special grown-up.
Respond to the questions in the booklet for each piece you view. Do your best work here.
Return Passport to your teacher after each visit.

The 205 Retirement Raffle
If Business Time represents a lifetime of financial independence, the Retirement Raffle represents the retirement of the citizens of Room 205.
Students may bring in up to two items to auction on the day of the event.
All items must be created by the student, or the student must have some part in their creation. No items may be raffled that were purchased, however supplies may be store-bought. Creative, thoughtful, high-quality items sell for the highest amount. Students who have done their market research and know what their customers would like tend to do best at this sales event.
Take a look at some items from past auctions and raffles.
