What is a lyre and flip folder and why do I need it?
A lyre/flip folder holds your music during outdoor performances. As an 8th grader, we do not expect you to memorize your music for the homecoming performance, so a lyre is necessary to be able to perform and practice with the group! When you enter high school, you will continue to use it to learn your music during band practices.
Lyres for each instrument look different as they attach to each instrument differently, some have built in flip folders, and some require a separate flip folder. You will want to make sure to get the correct lyre/folder for your instrument. Rettig keeps many of these in stock to make it easy for you, but you can also order them online.
Below are the examples and links to help you figure out what you need!
Actually all one piece, students do not need to buy a separate flip folder! This will hook onto their arms, not the actual flute. This is also a the option we use for cymbal players!
This will require a separate flip folder.
Trumpet Lyre (also for Mellophones)
All trumpets are not the same, so lyre purchases can be difficult. This option does not require you to purchase a separate flip folder, it is all one piece! (bottom bell clips)
Similar to trumpets, there are many options, but this one does not require you to purchase a separate flip folder! (slide bell clips)
Tubas vary so much, especially with school assigned instruments. Typically, tubists hold their flip folder with their left hand instead of attaching it to their instruments. You only need to purchase a flip folder.
Many students will want extra pages for their flip folders. These can also be purchased from our local music store or online.
Rettig Music offers the option to place orders over the phone/online and deliver them to school for your student.
