Helping children in our K–12 classrooms to understand the effects of prolonged war and violence on their peers in other countries is a crucial part of guiding them toward global awareness and understanding their role as a global citizen. It can be difficult and helps to also discuss what is being done to help.

https://www.whitehelmets.org/en/ is a group of volunteer rescue workers who operate in war-torn Syria. They respond to bombings and destruction that result from the conflict by entering these dangerous zones to search for and rescue injured civilians. The White Helmets operate indiscriminately, helping anyone in need with no considerations for their political or religious views (The White Helmets, n.d.).
