WHY IS THIS BOND PROPOSAL ON THE BALLOT?

District 57 has facility improvement needs that need to be addressed in a timely fashion. Caroline Dormon Junior High's student enrollment is higher than the building's capacity. In order to address these capacity issues, new buildings need to be constructed to house all current students. This bond will also allow for the future growth of the school.

Carter C. Raymond Junior High has abandoned buildings on its campus would be removed to allow for more activity space for students. The installation of a sports complex would give students an opportunity to expand their interests in sports and outdoor activity.

In addition to the installation of the sports complex, the interior of the school would benefit from security upgrades, classroom renovations, and restroom renovations.

WHY IS RAPIDES PARISH SCHOOL BOARD ASKING FOR THIS BOND PROPOSITION WHEN THE DISTRICT RECEIVED COVID RELIEF MONEY?

The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) is restricted in how it can be spent. ESSER funds are focused on addressing improving academic outcomes and moving schools forward post-pandemic.  Expenses regarding facility maintenance is to enable schools to reduce the risk of virus transmission and exposure to environmental health hazards, and to support student health needs. Therefore, funds to build and address capacity issues in our district are not supported solely by ESSER.

District 57 is in need of facility maintenance that falls out of the realm of what ESSER funds allow. Whenever possible, RPSB plans to braid funds from this relief package with increased millages resulting from the bond proposition.
