After gaining familiarity with diagrams, students will read a description of an object or animal, and they must create a digital diagram accurately labeling the parts described in the text. The teacher will show students how to use the Pan Balance tool from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics to to explore the idea of equality using both addition and subtraction equations. After working with students to model this tool, students will try using the Pan Balance on their own. Students can also compare and explore this concept by making models of the equations using digital tools like digital base ten blocks or counters to represent equations.
