We had one of our most successful ever days within a sporting context at the annual First Year futsal tournament, which was held in the Cavan Complex on the 17th October. In what is always an enjoyable event, both our girls’ and boys’ teams completed a remarkable double sweep by winning their respective competitions outright. This was made all the more impressive given our small numbers compared to the much bigger and more fancied schools within Cavan. Our girls got the ball rolling by winning their first group game, against St. Aidan’s, Cootehill, 4-2. Goal scorers were Jade Cowan and Abby McDowell with an excellent hat-trick. The girls’ followed their first victory up with another excellent win against Breffni College, this time winning a very close game, 2-1, with Jade & Abby again sharing the goals. With two wins from two, we qualified for the final against a much-fancied Loreto side. After an end to end first half, the RSC girls rallied and put in a phenomenal team performance to win the game 4-2, and so winning the competition outright. Goal scorers in the final were Aoibheann Mulligan with two, Jade Cowan & Abby McDowell. Team was: Edel Murdy, Kayleigh Foster, Laura Leggett, Jade Cowan, Abby McDowell, Aoibheann Mulligan, Eilish Flood & Desree Okoroafor.

Our boys team also had two games in their group against Breffni College and St. Aidan's, Cootehill. In their first game against Breffni College, the boys showed great resilience coming from 2-1 down to win 3-2. Goal scorers were Luke Allison and super-sub Udo Okike with two. The boys followed this up with a more comprehensive 4-1 win against St. Aidan's, Cootehill, with Udo, Luke, with two, and Aaron Clarke amongst the goals. Having won both group games, the boys also qualified for the final, where they met St. Bricin’s, Belturbet. Having got off to a terrible start, conceding two early goals, the boys rallied and staged a remarkable comeback, winning the final 3-2, with Riordan Bradley and Luke Allison with two as goal scorers. A brilliant day for all involved. Team was: Cathal Doyle, Ríordán Bradley, Udo Okike, Luke Allison, Darragh Gould, Bryan Gould, Thomas Wilkin & Aaron Clarke.

Abby & Aoibheann Mulligan with the goals.

In the boys section we were pitted against Patrician High School Carrickmacross, St. Eunans College Letterkenny & Scoil Mhuire Buncrana. In our first game we were unlucky to draw 2-2 with Scoil Mhuire having lead for most of the game and hitting the post. Luke Allison scoring both goals. In our second game we came up against a very strong Patrician side who came out on top in a real titanic battle 4-3. Ríordán Bradley, Aaron Clarke & Cathal Doyle on the scoresheet.
