The library media center classes will focus on three areas over the course of the school year: Library Media Literacy, Coding Literacy, and Makerspace Literacy.
The mission of libraries has always been to enable lifelong learning, to foster a growth mindset and to support knowledge creation in schools and beyond. The maker movement supports this independent discovery. Therefore, it has been a natural progression to add makerspaces and makerspace activities to our library media centers
Makerspace is a place to explore, discover new ideas, create and build. It allows students to try something new and if they fail, they use their mistakes to improve and try again. Students will begin to find their passions and will share them with others.
Makerspace lessons will follow the steps of the engineering design process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve, Share/Communicate. Makerspace lessons will be integrated into Coding and Library Media lessons.
Coding is essential to help students thrive in a future driven by technology. When you teach coding, you teach skills like critical thinking and problem solving. Coding is also a new type of literacy that prepares students for careers of tomorrow.
Library Media Literacy lessons will provide instruction that fosters an appreciation for the various forms of media, stimulate an interest in reading, and inspire a life-long desire to learn.
