Chromebook Rules: Print and post your own rules and guidelines for student use. Introduce them and practice following each rule as a student and as a teacher. If a student violates any rule, they are subject to having their Chromebook go to “Chromebook Jail” for a period of time up to the teacher and the student must complete their work “Old School” on pencil and paper. Suggested rules: Thumbs on top- student must carry their Chromebooks with two hands at all times, and with their thumbs on top (clasping the notebook, not balancing it). 45 ‘em- Whenever a teacher, student, or guest is speaking, or your attention is needed at a place in the room, the screens should be at a 45 degree angle. A good rule of thumb is if you can see what is on the screen, it’s not closed far enough. No Chromebook Left Behind- No Chromebook should be left unattended in the classroom. If a student needs to step away, they may put their Chromebook on/in their desk or ask a nearby classmate to keep an eye on it. They can temporarily lock their screen to ensure their work is safe. If you stumble upon an unclaimed Chromebook, it goes to Chromebook Jail. No Roaming- Students will use only teacher approved websites and apps at the appropriate time. If a student is caught roaming the internet/apps their Chromebook goes to Chromebook Jail.

Some Dell Chromebooks offer a neat feature called Dell Activity Light that allows students to communicate their needs with you non-verbally. The feature offers a blue light, red light, and yellow light that students can use for various reasons. You can set the guidelines in your own room to meet your personal needs. Practice using them with students, and what constitutes the use of each light color. For instance, your students can use the blue light to indicate they are doing well and they don't need any assistance. The yellow light can indicate that they are unsure and may need some assistance when you get a chance. The red light can indicate that they are in need of your help right away and cannot continue their work until you help them.
