Adapted Physical Education is the art and science of developing and implementing a carefully designed physical education instructional program for an individual with a disability, based on a comprehensive assessment, to give the individual the skills necessary for a lifetime of rich leisure, recreation, and sport experiences to enhance physical fitness and wellness. (Auxter, Pyfer, & Huettig, 2001).
In order for a student to begin receiving APE services there are a number of things that must happen first. In most cases the physical education or classroom teacher who is providing direct services will set the referral process in motion. The Adapted PE teacher will then administer an assessment to the student to test their motor skills. In addition to the APE assessment, the student must also qualify for special education services to take part in APE. The APE teacher will present their findings from the assessment and make a recommendation at the student's ARD meeting.
