Class Activities

Class Activities

Some of the fun things we have going on in 5th Grade Language Arts/Social Studies class:

  • 9/11 Memorial
    • We will create a memorial to 9/11 victims, inspired by our class read-aloud, Towers Falling.
  • Library Visits
    • We visit Mr. J in the library every other Thursday, but there are a few exceptions (holidays, special events, projects, etc.). Students will check out at least 1 fiction and 1 nonfiction book during every visit. Students are responsible for returning these books and ensuring they always have library books to read at all times!
      • Upcoming Library Visit days: August 22; September 5; September 19; October 3; October 17; October 31.
  • Book Clubs
    • Your child will be placed in a "Book Club" reading group, in which each person has a designated responsibility, and they will be completing enrichment projects as they read, based on their reading level and Language Arts class placement. Students will be responsible for working together to help ensure that everyone is reading the novels, understands what they are reading and works together towards a common goal before moving on to the next novel. These will be year-long activities!
  • Newbery Reading Challenge
    • All 5th grade students participate in the Newbery Reading Challenge, in which students are challenged to set a reading goal in reading Newbery Award-winning and Newbery Honors books. Mrs. Ferriola, one of our fellow outstanding LME teachers, always helps sponsor this event for ALL students.
    • For students to take tests, click the link here: Newbery Challenge Tests. Their username is "RRISDs######" (minus the quotation marks and the student's "s number" follows the lower case s). Their password is simply their 6-digit "s number".
    • A list of Newbery Medal winning book titles is located here.
    • A copy of the Newbery Challenge reading log is located here.
      • BIOGRAPHY CHALLENGE - Each student is required to read at least ONE biography for their Newbery Reading Challenge. A list of suggested titles can be found here.
  • Cluster Helpers - 2nd/3rd Grade Descriptions - Helper Sign-Up

  • America Play
    • Each year, all 5th grade students perform "America" - a play/musical that Mr. Holmstrom (an incredibly talented musician) wrote to tell the story about the early history of the United States. All classes will learn the songs and their lines for the play in Language Arts classes with Mr. Sparks. (This happens in January/February.)
