Hi Parents!

Thank you for taking the time to check out our classroom website! I am excited to work with all of you throughout the school year to support, grow and develop your child's your math education. A lot of parents ask me what they can do to encourage their son or daughter's mathematical skills. See my recommendations below for ways you can help grow child's interest and love of math at home:

  1. ADOPT A NEW PERSPECTIVE: Math is all about thinking, reasoning, analyzing, wondering, discovering patterns and solving problems. Once we establish a new mindset, we can begin implementing new at home strategies. Support your child by allowing them to explore their own questions, make mistakes without being judged and solve challenging problems. When children are supported this way they are in the best position to develop their mathematical thinking skills to help them succeed.
  2. PARENTS AS LEARNING PARTNERS: Think of yourself as a partner in your child's learning process. It's okay to not know everything your child is learning! As learning partners, students and parents can find new things together wile working on math at home.
      • Make math about trial and error and not about right vs. wrong
      • Encourage thinking by asking questions
      • Keep the mood relaxed
      • Be less helpful - if you end up doing the work for your child, they won't learn!
      • Play games & tackle puzzles together
  3. FOSTER A GROWTH MINDSET: A growth mindset embodies the idea that you believe your abilities can be improved with effort. This empowers to work harder to grow and develop their math skills. Pour on the praise for your child's efforts and consider the following:
      • Praise effort over outcomes
      • Identify a situation where your child demonstrated a growth mindset
      • Look for signs that reveal a fixed mindset
      • Encourage your child to end every sentence that starts with "I can't do..." with the word "yet."
  4. ENCOURAGE MATH GAMES: Any game that requires planning, logic or mental math is ideal for furthering children's mathematical skills. Develop a routine of playing math games at home with students. This helps kids feel like math is less of a burden.
