Students do not receive numerical grades in kindergarten, first and second grade. Students will receive meaningful feedback from their teachers to guide their learning. The RRISD Primary Report Card is a standards-based continuum, meaning that progress is reported on the knowledge and skills your child is expected to master at each grade level. The continuum is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and ranges from Performance Level 1 to Performance Level 4.
Level 1 - Exhibits skill/concept with direct guidance
Level 2 – Exhibits skill/concept with minimal guidance
Level 3 – Exhibits mastery of skill/concept
Level 4 – Exhibits understanding beyond grade level expectation.
Teachers assess a student’s performance level through observation, work samples, dialogue, performance tasks, and other informal and formal measures. Students are retaught at the time of need and given multiple opportunities to show mastery of a concept or skill.
To see the Performance Indicators and full rubrics to describe a student’s performance, choose the “Parents” link at the top of the Round Rock ISD web page (www.roundrockisd.org), and click on “Elementary Report Cards” under the Academics section.
Students earn numerical grades on a 0-100 scale.
Redo/Retake
According to District Policy (EIA Local), “a classroom teacher shall provide students a reasonable and fair opportunity to retake or redo failing work.” In our elementary schools, the focus is on reteaching to provide the student an opportunity to learn the objective and demonstrate an understanding of the concept. This reteaching will occur within 10 days, and corrections may be made to improve a grade up to a 70%.
Number of Grades per Quarter
District Policy (EIA Local) states that grading guidelines shall ensure that grades reflect a student’s relative mastery of an assignment and that a sufficient number of grades are taken to support the grade average assigned. Elementary teachers will take a minimum of seven grades each quarter in each core content area (reading, writing, math, science, social studies).
