PE Guidelines:
2023-2024 Ridgeview Middle School Physical Education Guidelines
Uniforms:
All RMS students enrolled in a Physical Education course (Wellness, Pre-Athletics and Sports Fit) must wear a standard uniform daily.
The RMS PE uniform can be purchased for $30 ($15 shirt/$15 short) during Panther Welcome or the first week of school. The uniform must be worn everyday as part of a preparation grade.
PE students will be required to complete Functional Fitness workouts (WODS) at least twice a week.
IN COLDER WEATHER, students may wear jackets/sweatshirts underneath the RMS PE shirt. Students may wear sweatpants in the colors navy blue, black, or gray only, instead of the RMS uniform shorts.
Students are NOT permitted to wear their school clothes underneath their PE uniform.
Once uniforms are purchased, we REQUIRE that students write their first and last names permanently on the outside of their shorts and shirts.
Students should wear proper footwear during class daily. Athletic tennis shoes only (no Vans, slides, boots or heels) with socks.
No jewelry may be worn.
Students are required to take their uniforms home at the end of each week, wash them, and bring them back for class the following week.
All clothing and shoes left behind will be put in the Lost and Found hamper located in the locker rooms. If a student “misplaces” a uniform or other item, he/she is encouraged to check the lost and found BEFORE reaching “panic mode.” ☺ (Please note that items that are locked up properly in lockers will not be “misplaced.”)
Dressing Out/Lockers/Locks:
Failure to dress out in the required PE uniform, and not wearing proper shoes will result in: deductions from daily preparation grade. If a student loses their PE uniform, they will need to buy a new one. They will need to dress out in a grey, black or navy shirt and shorts until they have the proper uniform. Students who are injured and/or sick will dress out and report immediately to their roll call spot with their injury note. If students are able to complete modified workouts, coaches will assign, and the student is expected to try their best.
A student is ONLY excused from participation if he/she has a written note from a parent or doctor. A student may only be excused a maximum of 3 days with a parent note. After 3 days, a doctor’s note is required. We ask that parents use discretion when writing notes for students (if they are okay for school, they are usually okay for PE). In most cases, coaches can provide a modified workout to injured students (EX: Upper or Lower Body only). Note: they will be sore after our fitness workouts (this is normal), sitting out will not alleviate soreness and will only hinder advancements in their fitness levels.
Students who refuse to dress out or participate in any activity will be given an office referral and removed from class.
Each student will be assigned a locker which they will share with a locker buddy. Each student needs to bring a combination lock. Students are responsible for knowing their combinations, putting their belongings in their lockers, and should keep their lockers locked at all times.
6th grade students only have the small box sized lockers. Backpacks will not fit in these lockers. They are required to lock all valuable items (money, phones, jewelry, etc) in their lockers. Backpacks should be placed on the floor or benches beside their locker.
Students may have deodorant and hygiene products in lockers, but NO GLASS OR AEROSOL products are permitted in the locker rooms.
Cell phones are NOT allowed to be out in the locker rooms for any reason. Students needing to use a phone may use one in the coach's office. Visible phones will be taken up and sent to the office!
DO NOT share combinations with other students that are not your locker buddy.
All students need to bring a labeled water bottle to class each day to stay hydrated. We have a water refill station in the cafeteria outside the gym.
Procedures:
Once the bell has sounded for class to begin, students have 5 minutes to be dressed out and in the gym for roll call (All lockers must be LOCKED.)
Teachers will check uniforms, take attendance, and answer any questions at that time.
Students will then participate in dynamic warm ups in preparation for the daily activities.
Once the whistle blows, no talking is allowed. Two short whistles mean two claps by students to know that the students are listening and focused.
Students will listen attentively, follow teacher instructions, observe demonstrations, practice skills/fundamentals, and perform activities to the best of their abilities.
Students will complete WOD workouts at least two times a week.
Students are to display good attitudes and sportsmanship with others at all times.
Exceptional attitude and behavior will be noticed, recognized, and rewarded (PAWS award).
Once dismissed from the day’s activities, students are to report immediately to the locker room, dress back in their school clothing, get a quick drink of water, and be seated in their ASSIGNED ROLL CALL SPOTS until the dismissal bell.
Consequences for Procedure Violations:
Conference with individual student, grade deduction, and extra work.
Call or email to parents, grade deduction, and extra work.
Parent/Teacher conference at school, grade deduction, and extra work.
Office Referral, grade deduction, and extra work.
Six Weeks Grading:
Students will be graded on the following two categories on a scale of 0-100.:
Preparation-40%
This category includes student having proper uniform/footwear, having their hair up & no jewelry, being on time for class, sitting in assigned spot, and locking their lockers.
Performance-60%
This category includes student showing maximum effort/participation in class activities, WODS, and fitness days. They will be graded according to their effort and completion of the workout on fitness days.
A student who is responsible and takes pride in his/her work should have no trouble making an “A” in Physical Education.
