Overview
Purpose
Physical Education is an integral part of the total educational program of each student in our district. Through the medium of sport and movement all students will participate in a sequential, differentiated program that fosters each student's personal health, fitness and safety. Through exposure to a wide variety of activities, students will gain the necessary knowledge to understand the importance of and make educated decisions to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The physical education department is committed to and supports the development of a positive and appropriate values driven education. Social skills which include but are not limited to respect, cooperation, communication, teamwork and sportsmanship are an important aspect of the physical education curriculum and will be directly taught throughout the students school career (Coach John Wooden's Pyramid of Success).
The values, principles and concepts associated with a quality physical education program surpass the boundaries of the gymnasium and playing fields. Physical activity is a catalyst for learning in all content areas. We are committed to providing programming in physical education which allows frequent and diverse opportunities to engage in physical activities necessary to support a healthy mind and body.
Overview/Course Outline
Our physical education program at Walsh Middle School is based on functional fitness and sport related skills.
Functional Fitness: Functional fitness will take place on Monday and Wednesdays. These exercises train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work (school) or in sports. While using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time, functional fitness exercises also emphasize core stability. For example, a squat to bicep curl is a functional exercise because it trains the muscles used when you pick up an object from the floor or a table. By training your muscles to work the way they do in everyday tasks, you prepare your body to perform well in a variety of common situations. Functional exercises tend to be multi-joint, multi-muscle exercises. Instead of only moving the elbows, for example, a functional exercise might involve the elbows, shoulders, spine, hips, knees and ankles. This type of training, properly applied, can make everyday activities easier, reduce your risk of injury and improve your quality of life. Our PE program is developed around these key concepts.
Sport Related Skills: Our sport units will take place on Tuesday and Thursdays. The boys and girls will trade weeks for being indoors and outdoors. The units we will introduce include, but not limited to: Elimination nukem, ultimate football, dance, volleyball, basketball, jump rope, mat ball, hex ball-kickball, indoor hockey, lacrosse, football, soccer, spike ball, introduction to track & field and capture the flag.

You can learn to open a combination lock by watching this YouTube video or learn by playing this fun game.
