FAQ's

What is pre-athletics? Pre-athletics is a physical education class designed to prepare 6th grade students for UIL programs while still implementing the required 6th grade PE TEKS.

What is the purpose of pre-athletics? Pre-athletics is designed to provide students with an advanced curriculum directly linked to upcoming UIL sports in which they will be eligible to participate in as 7th graders.

Will pre-atheltics count as a PE credit? Yes, all middle school students must complete at least 2 years (4 semesters) of physical education. 

What types of workouts can I expect throughout the year? The course will focus on athletic conditioning, strength, agility and sport specific skills. Workouts will be more rigorous than a traditional PE class. 

Am I required to enroll in pre athletics if I want to participate in athletics as a 7th grader? While enrollment in this course will help students determine if they wish to participate as a 7th grader as well as better prepare them for 7th grade athletics, it is not required. 

Do I need a sports physical to participate in pre-athletics? No, a physical is not required until 7/8th grade athletics.

What at the required items for pre-athletics? Students will need to purchase the Walsh athletic shirt. Students will provide their own athletic bottoms (shorts/pants), a pair of athletic tennis shoes and a master lock. The lock cannot have any letters on it, no key locks and/or up-down-right-left locks. You can learn to open a combination lock by watching this YouTube video or learn by playing this fun game. 

What items are recommended for pre-athletics? Students are encouraged to bring baby wipes and deodorant for hygiene purposes. Students do not have enough time to shower; baby wipes and deodorant are a great alternative until students are able to shower at home. 

Will I have a locker to store my personal belongings? Yes, a 12x12 lockers will be issued to students once they bring a lock. Locks with letters, up/down/right/left or keys are not permitted. Sharing lockers is not permitted. You can learn to open a combination lock by watching this YouTube video or learn by playing this fun game. 

Are pre-athletic students given preferential treatment at athletic team tryouts? Pre-athletic students are not given preferential treatment at athletic team tryouts. Coaches may be more familiar with student-athletes who participate in pre-athletics but each student is given the same opportunity to showcase their abilities at tryouts. 

What if I enroll in pre-athletics but decide I want out of it and into PE? The campus master schedule and drop/add policies determine what schedule changes look like. Please contact your grade level counselor for more specific information.
