Classroom teachers will be using a schoolwide curriculum called Second Step to teach weekly social-emotional learning lessons in the classrooms. Here are some of the topics that they will cover this year:
PPCD/Pre-K: Welcoming others, asking for what you want, self-talk, identifying feelings, managing anger, waiting, and disappointment, saying the problem, handling accidents, thinking of solutions, and making friends
K: Many topics covered in Pre-K, plus: Learning to listen, focusing attention, caring and helping, following directions, being assertive, identifying feelings, identifying and handling anger, handling rudeness, disappointment, and problems, and fair ways to play
1st: Many topics covered in Pre-K and K, plus: Showing care and concern, calming down anger, managing worry, solving problems, and inviting others to play
2nd: Previous topics, plus, being respectful, focusing attention and listening, confidence, respecting different preferences, compassion, predicting feelings, emotion management, responsibility, and handling mistakes, embarrassment, anxiousness, and anger
3rd: Many topics covered in previous years, plus: Being respectful learners, planning to learn, identifying others’ feelings, understanding perspectives, conflicting feelings, test anxiety, handling accusations and hurt feelings, and dealing with peer pressure
4th: Many topics covered in previous years, plus: Empathy and respect, being assertive, respecting differences and similarities, understanding complex feelings, conversation and compliments, joining in, avoiding jumping to conclusions, and making a plan
5th: Many topics covered in previous years, plus: Disagreeing respectfully, responding with compassion, calming down, resisting revenge, avoiding assumptions, seeking help, and dealing with gossip and peer pressure
